Secure your spot at the Camo to College and Beyond: Transitioning Military to Nurses Conference that is taking place on Friday, June 8th, 2018 (pre-conference on Thursday, June 7th) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Space is limited! Registrations will be accepted until full or until Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018, whichever occurs first. The conference is offered at no cost to participants, and hors d'oeuvres (Thursday evening) and lunch (Friday) will be provided. Keynote speaker is Marian Smithey, MSHP, BSN, RN. Marian is a Nurse Consultant and Project Officer for the Heath Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
The conference will focus on educational support for veterans in their transition from military member to practicing nurse. Objectives include:
- Academic and clinical needs of the military / veteran population
- Best practices in granting credit for military experience
- Best practices for veteran student admissions and retention
- Strategies to support veteran transitions into and out of the academic environment (including curricular adaptation)
During the pre-conference on Thursday, June 7th, you are invited to participate in a 90-minute Military Simulation highlighting the experiences commonly reported by returning veterans in a university setting. Participants will gain a sense of what it is like to be a service member juggling various responsibilities while pursuing a college degree. Over the past five years, the Department of Nursing at Davenport University earned the honor of becoming a Veteran Bachelor of Nursing participant under the Health Services and Resources Administration grant. This academic pathway in the BSN-Prelicensure program fast tracks former medical military personnel by granting advanced standing for transcripted military training or credit by exam.
