Avoid Slips, Trips, and Broken Hips!

As we all know, fall-related injuries can be extremely dangerous and can increase lengths of stay, increase costs, and can be fatal. The World Health Organization considers falls a global health problem and account for 40% all injury deaths worldwide.

To address this risk, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nursing Research Network published the results from a study on a nurse-led intervention evaluating the effectiveness of a web-based fall prevention tool kit (FPTK) in four acute care hospitals.

The researchers found patients who received this intervention had significantly lower adjusted fall rate than control units, with older (and most at-risk) patients seeing the largest decreases in falls.

Nursing’s role at bedside and in evaluation is essential to implementing a program to reduce the risk of falls. Visit the RWJF here to learn more.
